- Hi Reb! Back in the 50s there were bazillions of Garands sold as surplus. It was the "in" thing to turn them into "hunting" rifles. some of the work was exemplary, some quite mediocre. The Garands were not alone in suffering this fate,as a lot of 03 Springfields,K98s,Krags,Enfields,and more nice rifles got shorter and lost wood. I couldn't imagine anyone doing this today. I'm sure the rifle you put a link to was done way long ago.
- I agree. My god that's ugly. Why the heck do something like that to a classic?
- Beats me. Although it is not something I would do, or even recommend, I won't even try to guess the motive of anyone doing anything. I will say though that any collector value has been destroyed(not by the stock)because of the engine turning on the gas cylinder. The stock and bolt can be replaced. Note the starting bid:$199.
- Wow, that is one uglyfied M1. At least it could still be restored with some parts replacement. Here's some more sporterized M1's...http://www.mccannindustries.com/rifles/garand/garand.html I can't say that I care for this, but at least it's well done. The sad thing is that the U.S. Government has destroyed more surplus firearms than all the "sporterizers" combined.
- My God. That person should be castrated, lobotomized, and locked in a barrel and thrown over a bridge.
- The kind who couldn't afford a sporting semi-automatic rifle, had a surplus M1 Garand on hand, and wanted a sporter. Or basically the same people who back in the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s sporterized thousands of 1903 Springfields, P17 Enfields, Krag-Jorgensons, Mauser 98s, Lee Enfields, Lebels, and Carcanos. Or the same people who are busy turning Mosin-Nagants into sporters today because they want a cheap sporting rifle and converting a military surplus rifle with an aftermarket stock is the cheapest way to get one.
- I wept when I read of somebody slashing the Mona Lisa once. This is worse. But I must confess a fascination with the mutilations to which MJ provided a link.
- Why somebody would do that to THAT Garand? Chemical imbalance. But, I have no problem with "sporterizing" Garands in general. Many of these projects start out as otherwise unusable, no collector value guns anyways, with shot out barrels, or mismatched parts and crap stocks. There is no way to return the Garand to original, historically correct condition, so you may as well take advantage of the excellent design and make a usable rifle out of it. Don't be so quick to denounce these as bastardizations of history, but as innovative ways of keeping them out of the scrap piles (reduce, reuse, recycle, ehh?) Also, one thing to note is that detachable mag, semi auto guns are viewed as "assault rifles" in some states and banned or restricted. Since the Garand does not have a detachable mag, it is exempted from these restriction, but is every bit as quick to reload as one; making it a viable option in capacity limitted, mag restricted states (AKA occupied territories (e.g: Kalifornistan))
- That rifle is PIMPtastic! I really like the jeweling on the bolt! Whoever would do that to a garand should burn! Its actually has a WWII era receiver based on serial #. I just can't believe people actually bid on it! If I had the money I would buy it just to put it out of it's misery.
- WOW! Looks like something a Mexican drug gangster would use. Where is the gold trimming????
- OMG that's terrible! its all pimped out and stupid. took at the jeweled muzzle thingy and bolt! it just doesn't look well like that. what away to spend a ton of money and ruin a perfectly good piece of US history!
