Ebay: What's the difference between automatic bidding and Max bidding?

Doesn't automatic bidding bid only up to your max bid? So why go max bid instead of automatic bidding if you would only pay the same amount in both instances?

1. You have to put in a maximum bid in order for ebay to automatically bid up for you to that amount. They aren't two separate functions. So if you put in a max bid for 20 dollars on something, ebay automatically will bid up to that amount. If you win the item for 15 dollars as high bidder, you only pay 15 dollars, not the full 20.
