How do I make my shorts look like this?

Today I went to an op shop and brought an old pair of jeans to turn into high waisted, fashionable shorts. I really like these shorts (link below) and I have made holes in the shorts like these ones and now I was wondering if anyone had any tips so I can make the edges/bottoms of my short look like these ones, doesn't have to be exact! http://www.collectibles-articles.com/antique/Vtg-80s-HIGH-WAISTED-Cut-Off-RIPPED-Denim-Shorts-8_350422578273.html

  1. I would take an existing pair of shorts you like the cut of and trace them to get the curve on the front of the shorts correct. Add about 1" to the length to allow for fraying. With a sewing machine, make a line across the fronts and backs, it's a "saftey stitch" to kerp the shorts from fraying. On the pair in the picture, they are cut sort of like a lightning bolt to give it that look. Then, wash the jeans in hot water, and dry them. You may need to trim them to get the threads even.
