What does NO SALE mean and do on an antique cash register?

I'm wondering what the no sale key means and what it does on the antique cash registers. I have heard that when your register is having problems that you can use no sale to reset it to zero and keep using your cash register. Let me know what the right thing is to this no sale antique cash register question.

  1. No sale was used when you asked the owner to break a dollar bill for change so you could ride the bus or make a 10 cents phone call.
  2. Cash registers include a key labeled "NS", which is abbreviated for "No Sale", and opens the drawer, printing a receipt stating "No Sale" and recording it in the register log that the register was opened.
  3. Cash registers have two tapes. One is given to the customer and one is for permanent records. They are designed to open the cash drawer only if a transaction has happened. No Sale is used if you want to open the drawer without it showing that money went in or out, It indicates on the internal tape that the drawer was opened but the money should stay the same.
