  3. eBay is good for spoon collecting, you can get some good bargain spoon or fork out on some rare ones usually there are many antiques available. Another good idea is things like garage or yard sales, you'd be surprised how many people have some old spoons in the shed and realise that spoons can actually be worth a lot of money. This eBay site is a good start. http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?rt=nc&_ssn=savingu&_trksid=p3286.c0.m301 This is a rare antique spoon currently for sale. It would be a good start to your collection. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/RARE-collectable-spoon-marked-EPGM-Dodo-antique-/200643517151?pt=AU_Homeware_Kitchenware&hash=item2eb7491adf
  4. Keep in mind that it's the process of collecting that's fun. Then decide on how you're going to build your collection. For example: 1. Are you going to collect only sterling silver ones? Or mix them up among sterling, pewter, and other metals? 2. Will you separate them into categories (commemorative, location, antique; demitasse, teaspoons, baby spoons, other)? 3. Are you looking for themes in the design? Flower designs are easy to find, and there are other themes as well. 4. How will you display them (shadow box, spoon hangers)? Or will you keep them in a tarnish-proof box? As for finding them: Most places that attract tourists make souvenir spoons available. Sometimes the sterling ones are tiny, because they are rather expensive. Pewter ones are usually larger and less expensive. And there are usually other silver-colored ones that are inexpensive. Other places to look for spoons include antique shops, flea markets, tag sales, swap meets, and so on. If you're looking for a particular spoon--for example, a baby spoon in a Reed & Barton silver pattern--try Replacements Ltd. in Greensboro, NC, and other professional resellers. Advice from a long-time spoon collector: The fun of collecting is looking for spoons wherever you go and finding spoons that are appropriate for "the collection." After I started collecting, other people started collecting for me and giving me spoons for gifts. I appreciated the gifts, and never discouraged them--but I displayed them separately from the spoons I collected myself, because each of the ones *I* added to the collection had a story or a memory for me. If you collect sterling silver spoons, learn as much as you can about cleaning the spoons and preventing tarnish. When I bought display racks, they were open, so I had to clean the spoons about 4 times a year (and they were looking pretty dismal by the time cleaning time came around). If I had it to do over, I would have glass-front, air-tight display cases made that would show off the spoons and also prevent tarnish. A friend has hers displayed in a coffee table whose top is a shadow box, and they stay clean inside. I have quit displaying my spoons because I now have several racks of them and I got tired of fighting the tarnish.
