I have started doing a couple of days in a charity shop and The manager is stealing good stock to sell at home?
They have cut my hours down to just 3 Days a week, So I decided to do a few Hours work for a large well known charity shop. I got quite friendly with the manager, I was at his home for a coffee I asked if I could nip to the toilet, His upstairs was CRAMMED with expensive quality clothes and shoes etc. He spilt the beans and told me he sorts the stock before it goes on sale and takes home the pick of the crop and sells it on that well known online auction. And pockets the cash for HIMSELF It made me sick to the stomach! I always wondered why charity shops look like they have got there stock from a tip? My question is this.. What can I do about this. Would the Police be interested in this or should I just mind my own business Thank you for your answers Have a great day. He is the manager of a well known charity shop and gets a paid wage

- You don't say what kind of a charity shop this is. If it is his, he is committing fraud and yes the cops would want to know as well as the FBI. If it is not his, the employer would need to know first. Ask to use his bathroom again and take picture of the loot with a phone or something
- Shop him to the police. That has got to rate as pretty darn low. People are giving to the shop to support the charity. Not to line this Low-lifes pockets.
- Technically he is stealing so yes the police should know
- Oh dear, I do so hate it when people steal from a charity....they don't deserve to be victims. He needs to be exposed and removed... best way for that to happen is to tell one of the trustees or board members...even the chair of the board. There will be a complaints procedure or even a whistle blowing policy... but if you want the job done right...go to the top. Yes of course the police may get involved but it would probably be best if you were not directly the instigator... and gave the charity a chance to salvage something from this situation. If the public knew they would never give stuff to them again... if they handle it right they can keep this discrete.
- The Police will not be interested as it is not technically theft, but the Head Office of the Charity will be. Phone them. UK
- Part of me wants to say mind your own business but then the other part says get the police involved - he is after all stealing and if he was doing that with new stock you would not think twice. Do you know that he steals the stock, you could be making a massive assumption there - maybe he buys it in which case thats different. Tough call and only you can make it.
- Give us the the name and address of the charity shop and we will contact their head office! If you can't do this, then do it yourself. You have already implicated yourself by knowing what the manager may be up to and not reporting it! Why should you get into trouble for a thief!
- My thoughts on this would indeed involving the police. You need to go to your local police station, explain briefly your observations to the receptionist or duty officer, but also ask you wish to remain anonymous, and please do not accuse the manager of theft in front of them, just state what you have seen. You should then be seen by an officer who may decide if the case is worth taking on. As the manager knows you know, it would not be difficult for him to realise that it was you who reported his crime, and this may turn out awkward for you. The police will have ways to investigate whether a crime is been committed, and should be happy to work on your tip off. My advice therefore is to report it, with as much detail as you can, then forget it. Please do not discuss the matter with anyone else who works for the charity, as you may not know how many people could be involved, or how high up the ladder, so to speak, people are involved. Think you have been very brave to bring this to light, but now leave it to the professionals. I wish there were more people like you out there, and you have my most sincere thanks in taking action against what is a most disgusting crime, depriving the needy people who the charity helps. Well done, and you have a great day too, you deserve it. Thank you. Lets hope your actions and honesty brings results, and although nobody may ever know, you can be proud of what you did.
- Unfortunately, this kind of thing is rife in charity shops. All the staff are 'at it', the manager getting the cream. It's the 'perks of the job' I'm told. In fact, it's 'my experience', having had recent dealings with well known 'military' charities, that they are becoming like insurance firm, with massive 'intakes' and tiny 'payouts', while the internal heads of the charities 'cream off' big fat salaries and expenses and who knows if all the money collected by the 'unpaid' charity volunteers is sent to HQ? A concentrated (undercover) investigation of ALL charities should be considered, as soon as possible, like yesterday! In your case, Susan. Make sure you get some evidence and your facts right, if you do report him (and you should, lest you get the blame for not doing so, later). He might deny it and even get other corrupt members of staff to back him up.
