Belt Auction

What do you wear to an auction? Is it alright to go to one without bidding?

One of my favorite celebrity's personal belongings are going to be auctioned off in NYC in the near future and my best friend and I thought it would be fun to go check it out. We've never been to an auction before, so we're not quite sure what to wear to one. I was thinking about wearing a black skirt (that falls mid-calf) and a nice top with some black flats. (I'd probably have a pair of jeans and/or at least some sneakers to change into afterwards since I'm planning on doing a LOT of walking. ) What about clothes for a guy to wear? We're both 20 and we don't want to look too dressed up all day. Also, can you go to an auction and not bid. We already know that we're not likely to be able to afford anything, but we still want to go- just for fun and to get as close to these items as we possibly can. Thank you very much!

1. Doesn't matter what you wear. OK to not bid. However depending on the auction you may have to register at the door to get a seat. If you are not going to bid, why not just go to the viewing, which is held earlier?
