Backpacking europe this summer: is a eurail pass worth buying when discount airfare is so abundant?

- If you are going through Switzerland or something during the day the alps are a beautiful sight to see which you wouldn't be able to do on the plane. It all depends on your personal opinion though! Certain locations I wouldn't want to take a plane while others I wouldn't really care either way. http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/ has ridiculously cheap European airfare and I hear Eurail passes get pretty pricey.
- I have been seeing where many people are dissing the whole eurail experience. And I have also heard that everyone flies these days, because it IS so cheap, especially for longer distances. If all you want to do is watch the scenery go by in Switzerland, you buy a one-way ticket from Zurich to Geneva, or whatever, and then you hop on a plane from Geneva to Paris. Your best bet, really, is to compare prices. you can do it all online, and figure out what you need to know. No more travel agents trying to sell you what they make the most money on.
- If you're mostly interested in seeing the cities, take planes. If you want to see the countryside and take some overnight trainsto saveon hotels and wake up in another country, trains are really cool. Maybe you can do a combination, like don't get the global eurail pass. Maye Get a selectpass, picking 3-5 countries you want to travela lot in, and take some flights too. If you're under 26 the eurail passes are a pretty good deal, but over 26 they're expensive now.
- Rail might be different experience from Air.
